Matthew Burl

Matthew is an architect and director at Buttress who has led the successful design and delivery of new build and refurbishment projects across a range of cultural, academic and community-led sectors, both regionally and internationally. 

He also coordinates the practice's sustainability activities and has led Buttress' B Corp journey helping the company achieve certification at the end of 2022.

Matthew enjoys a collaborative approach to all project work, and when leading multi-disciplinary design teams, he offers a wide range of technical and professional advice and experience. A passionate and informed designer, he defines a clear and innovative vision for all projects, ensuring that the design DNA is articulated from concept to delivery.

Matthew's specialism lies in the design of academic and research-led environments. During his career, he has delivered numerous new build, adaptive reuse and strategic masterplan schemes both regionally and internationally for clients including The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, UCLan, Leeds Beckett University, The Royal BC Museum, and The State University of Haiti.

Matthew coordinates the practice's sustainability activities and is leading Buttress' journey towards becoming a B Corp certified company.

He also supports Buttress' design review process, where he is involved in peer reviewing design proposals for projects across the studio.
