Chorlton Villas is a development of 28 family houses, overlooking the Chorlton Ees nature reserve and an adjacent local golf course.
Designed for Step Places, a major design driver was to create a development that combined innovative design and communal amenities with eco-living, whilst sitting in harmony with existing neighbouring housing stock and the site’s semi-rural setting.
As a nod to existing local greens, Chorlton Green and The Mead, the site layout provides a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional village green typology, with all homes set out to define a generous communal space at the heart of the development.
Each of the houses have also been arranged to front directly onto this shared space, giving residents a visual and physical connection to the green, whilst tying the development to the surrounding landscape.
The street scape is articulated and views to the outside have been facilitated by the stepping down of houses progressively into the site. This aspect has been further reinforced by stepped roof line profiles and re-cessed single storey garages that punctuate and articulate the street frontages of the detached houses.
The elevations have been designed to provide a sense of order along the street in keeping with the repetitive but modulated housing in the area. A limited palette of materials serves to further complement and reinforce the simplicity of form and re-strained detailing, in keeping with the development’s understated detailing
Internally, each of the houses been designed with the evolving needs of residents in mind and have been planned to facilitate client-specific customised internal layouts with circulation and service cores located within the heart of the plan.
All have private amenity spaces at ground, first and second floor level which are designed to give residents the greatest flexibility in how they use the space, from the arrangement of the bedrooms to deciding which floor will house their living space. This designed-in flexibility provides a level of future-proofing by enabling residents to adapt the spaces within the homes to suit their immediate, potential, and long-term requirements
