Buttress starts work at Chetham's School of Music

After months of planning and inspection, Buttress is set to embark on a significant project to restore Whiteley Hall at Chetham's School of Music, in the heart of Manchester.

The specialist school was founded in 1969 and consists of 330 students aged 8-18 whose common passion is music.

The hall, part of the Grade II listed Millgate House (one of the school’s boarding houses), suffered a devastating fire in 2021 – thankfully no one was hurt, but the space requires extensive repair and reinstatement works. After finally securing listed building consent, Buttress will begin the work in January 2024.

Simon Chaplin, Operations Director at Chetham’s School of Music, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Buttress to restore the beautiful Whiteley Hall. Buttress understands the hall’s heritage and that it is a vital space for students to come together for practise and performance.

“Chetham’s historic buildings are a significant part of Manchester’s landscape, and this restoration work will mean all our spaces can be used and enjoyed by talented young people for decades to come.”

Our goal is to ensure that the meticulous restoration respects the hall’s history while providing a key space for the school’s students to engage in rehearsals and performances.”

Steve Kendall, Senior Architect at Buttress emphasised the importance of the project, stating, “Our commitment to restoring Whiteley Hall goes beyond structural repairs. We recognise the rich heritage embedded in this prominent building, which plays a fundamental role in the school’s life. Our goal is to ensure that the meticulous restoration respects the hall’s history while providing a key space for the school’s students to engage in rehearsals and performances.”

The appointment of Butress Architects marks a crucial milestone in reinstating this vital space in the renowned school of music in Manchester.  Once the works are completed, planned for Spring 2024, the hall will once again contribute to the vibrancy of the world-renowned music school.
