Buttress’ Alex Scrimshaw – from apprentice to finalist

Twenty years ago, Buttress’ Alex Scrimshaw started his career as an apprentice architectural technologist, joining us from school at age sixteen. Today, it’s been announced that he is a finalist in the national Architectural Technology Awards – one of the industry’s highest accolades.  The AT Awards celebrate the technology of architecture at its finest and showcases the achievements in delivering creative and innovative designs.  Alex is a finalist in the coveted Architectural Technologist Award 2023 and the winner will be announced in October.

Alex was nominated by his Buttress colleagues, including Associate Heritage Consultant Jenna Johnston who commented:

Alex puts the buildings and clients first and is committed to making appropriate and effective changes to the historic environment.  He has become an inspirational leader for Architectural Technologists and for the wider team within the studio.  He thoroughly deserves to stand alongside the other finalists, and with luck, win in October.”

Early in his career, whilst as an apprentice, Alex focused on projects which spanned historic, ecclesiastical and hotel buildings, including Lincoln and Leeds Cathedrals, Quarry Bank Mill and the easyHotel in Manchester.  More recently, Alex’s portfolio of work includes Caernarfon Castle, Carlisle Castle, The National Railway Museum and the Manchester Science and Industry Museum.  Always keen to share his knowledge and experience, Alex was recently published in the Architectural Technology Journal with his article offering insights into his approach to Caernarfon Castle.

The winner will be announced at the AT Awards event on 20 October.
