Phil joins Buttress’s growing Heritage Consultancy team and is based in the company's Leeds studio as it continues to develop its presence in the region with projects across Yorkshire.

Throughout his distinguished career in conservation and placemaking, Phil has been instrumental in some of Leeds’s most significant heritage and regeneration projects. Having led Leeds City Council's conservation team for 15 years, he has helped secure the future of landmark assets including First White Cloth Hall, Tower Works, Round Foundry and Leeds Town Hall, while championing heritage-led regeneration that has transformed communities, brought historic buildings back into use and supported sustainable growth across the city and wider region.

Phil is highly regarded amongst his peers and has a strong network of stakeholders and collaborators. He is also a much-respected recipient of the Mark Finch Award, which recognises the achievements of a person who has made a significant positive impact on the built environment and placemaking within the Leeds Metropolitan District. Phil’s long career in conservation at Leeds City Council made him well worthy of the award in 2025.

Jenna Johnston, Associate Director, Heritage Consultancy commented:

“I first worked with Phil back in 2015 through our project at the wonderful Grade II* listed First White Cloth Hall. Phil brought an enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and practical approach that made him a great collaborator on a tricky project. We’re thrilled that he’s agreed to bring his experience and energy to Buttress, and to future interesting and exciting projects we’ll work on together.”

Phil Ward said: “I joined Buttress because they are the best. I've known Jenna Johnston and director Stephen Anderson for many years and the offer of working with them was too good to turn down. Buttress has values that I respect with expertise that cannot be matched. I'm looking forward to being part of the team and strengthening Buttress’ presence in Yorkshire.”

Phil’s top picks of heritage projects across Leeds include: Victoria Quarter (now Victoria Gate), Briggate; Roundhay Park; Majestic Cinema; First White Cloth Hall; Old Broadcasting House, Woodhouse Lane, Newton Grove Parade, Chapeltown Road; Scape Leeds, Merrion Street; Hyde Park Cinema, Brudenell Road and Bear Pit, Cardigan Road.
