Buttress appointed for work on Earlestown Town Hall as part of major town centre regeneration scheme

Earlestown Town Hall is entering the construction stage of the regeneration.

We have been appointed as part of St Helens Borough Council’s £28 million regeneration programme for Earlestown town centre, which includes the transformation of the Grade II listed Earlestown Town Hall.

The restoration of the historic and much-loved town hall marks a major milestone in the revitalisation of  Earlestown and forms a key component of a wider regeneration programme supported by £20m from the Levelling Up Fund and a £8m St Helens Council investment.

The work will see the internal repair and upgrade of the town hall’s historic fabric, addressing long-standing deterioration issues and ensuring the building’s future for generations to come. Once complete, the transformed town hall will reopen its doors to the public in Spring 2026. The new offer includes flexible community spaces, lettable event and office facilities, and accessible public facilities.

Alongside the restoration will be a new courtyard and garden café extension. These additions will support the local economy and create a space for social interaction and community activity.

The regeneration of Earlestown Town Hall is part of a wider plan to reimagine the town centre. This includes the creation of a new multi-purpose market square, a permanent market canopy, improved public realm, and enhancements to pedestrian and cycle connectivity. The plan aims to create a welcoming, sustainable and people-friendly place.

We are working closely with St Helens Borough Council, its strategic development partner ECF, and contractors HH Smith & Sons.

Project lead, Emily Green, has commented:

"Earlestown Town Hall is such an interesting and people-focused project, and we're looking forward to seeing how it'll develop as part of the wider town regeneration. At the core of the project is a commitment to reinvigorating one of Earlestown's most treasured historic buildings, and the local community have been so passionate and involved every step of the way."

Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at St Helens Borough Council, said:

"Earlestown Town Hall holds deep historical and emotional value for the community, and its restoration is not just about preserving the past, but creating a vibrant and inclusive future. We’re delighted to be working with Buttress and our partners to breathe new life into this landmark and ensure it remains a cornerstone of civic life for generations to come."
