Working in collaboration with Planit-IE, Buttress have designed a scheme that reflects the town’s traditional market qualities and community spirit that is fitting for modern-day trading and outdoor events and activities. The planning application for the Market Grounds public realm has been submitted on behalf of Tameside Council, building on Planit.IE’s previous work on the Public Realm Strategy.
The proposals see the market area revitalised as the beating heart of Ashton; a vibrant destination designed to host a range of entertaining events attracting locals and visitors. It has been key to capture the essence of Ashton, highlighting and celebrating its history and unique assets which have been uncovered through a series of consultation events.
A canopy will serve as a hub for new and existing and new traders, fixed kiosks and a variety of activities and events. Additionally, there will be a range of seating and play opportunities, helping to animate the market square on a day-to-day basis.

"The regeneration of the market area presents an exciting opportunity for Ashton Town Centre as a new modern market town offering space for different types of events. Our approach has been centred around creating a unique canopy to shelter a space below for people to come together with flexible kiosks. Enabling them to have many uses from day to night – from large-scale events to stalls and kiosks that will be attractive to local start-ups and small-medium sized businesses. As well as enhancing the area, these will encourage town centre footfall.”
