A new entrance building for Magdalen College School that sits on a prominent site in a conservation area in central Oxford.
The building houses the school’s dining room, kitchens and servery on the ground floor; general teaching classrooms and staff rooms on the first; and the art and design technology department classrooms on the top floor. The latter benefit from north-lights and large north facing windows, creating a suite of bright and attractive rooms for the creation of art and design. The dining hall to the front of the building is a double height space that is lined with oak panelling and creating at once a traditional but contemporary space for the school to use both for daily dining, special occasions and events and the potential for external hire.
Passive environmental controls are designed into the building, maximising the use of natural light and ventilation where possible.
