Buttress was first appointed by easyHotel in 2015 to convert a Grade II listed former shipping warehouse, located in the heart of Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter, into a 116-bedroom hotel. Since then, the practice has continued its relationship with the budget hotel brand and is developing further sites in Birmingham and Ipswich.

In Manchester, the building envelop has been refurbished, reinstating the warehouse's original features. What was once the warehouse's original goods entrance, for example, has become the main entry point to the building.

Internally, the designs aimed to create a sense that the bathrooms and bedrooms are 'stored' within the warehouse. Existing iron columns, detailed connections and connecting oak beams remain exposed within the public corridors; bridging the rooms' modern design with the building's industrial past.
The designs have built on the industrial heritage of the building's past and offers a scheme that conserves existing heritage for future reuse.
