Our studio

You’ll find us in Ancoats, one of Manchester’s most popular neighbourhoods. A former warehouse district, Ancoats has recently undergone substantial regeneration and is now a lively mixed residential neighbourhood with an eclectic food and drink scene. We are a fifteen-minute walk from the main transport hubs in Manchester city centre and have a secure bike store for those who prefer pedal power.

Our studio occupies the ground and first floor of 41 Bengal Street. We are open plan with directors and assistants working side by side. We like it this way as we all learn from one another and can share ideas easily.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Buttress?

I love being so involved with the software/hardware that we use in the studio. It’s a constant learning curve that is actually quite fun to be on. Keeping abreast of industry standards and best practice along with advancements in our tools such as Revit, Dynamo, Enscape, etc. means there is never a dull moment.

Seeing designs visualised in 3D prior to their construction and placing them within their immediate context is fascinating, using Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality to essentially walk around/through the proposals really is next level.

Our culture

Our Buttress culture is open, inclusive and friendly. We celebrate success and work through challenges together. We look out for each other's health and wellbeing whilst supporting career development through formal and informal learning, including coaching and mentoring by our trained colleagues. We take our social responsibilities to the communities we serve seriously, with events and activities throughout the year including a staff trip in the autumn.

Happier weekdays

We recognise the importance of balance: it allows us to produce the best work of our lives, whilst feeling our greatest. Flexible hours, catered breakfasts, and regular social events have long been adopted in our studio, and we’re continually improving how we do things with feedback from our regular staff surveys. We also have our summer sports day, our yearly staff trip and various other research excursions and teambuilding events to keep the balance in our working lives.

Health and wellbeing

Every member of our team is enrolled onto our employer-paid health scheme, which includes dental, optical, consultations and therapy treatments.

We also have our own in-house team who have introduced a range of initiatives to help improve our team’s wellbeing. Each week we provide fresh fruit for everyone to help themselves to; we have monthly social breakfasts; and we have three trained mental health first aiders within the studio.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Buttress?

The company has always been a relaxed, open environment and all levels of experience are given the opportunity to be involved in projects, initiatives and have a say in the running of the studio. I particularly enjoy being able to assist in problem solving design issues alongside my colleagues.

Working on a number of interesting projects at various stages means no week is ever the same. Managing projects and working closely with aspirational clients who are striving for best practice and good design, driving and pushing us to be at our best challenges and excites me.

Creating an inclusive environment

We work as a team. Our values and our culture thread through not only the relationships we have with each other but also in creating authentic relationships with the people we work with.

We celebrate our differences and everyone in the studio has a voice and is respected, valued and heard. We understand that our people are happiest when they are supported and acknowledged, which is why we have created an environment that encourages learning, developing skills and sharing knowledge. We’re building a team of creative, inquisitive and diverse people who all share the same purpose – authentic relationships and insightful design.
