A site visit to the World at Wentworth Project yesterday, gave us first sight of the glasshouse with all internal scaffold removed. The grade II* listed structure has been subject to a significant restoration project in the last year.
The existing structure was tested, dismantled and, where needed, repaired. New elements were cast to the original designs and reconstruction has been ongoing for the last few months. All glazing is being replaced with custom, hand drawn toughened glass that has the same thin profile as the original horticultural glass, but is suitable for the new use as a public events space.
The interior planting theme for the glasshouse reflects and interprets the Victorian enthusiasm for collecting exotic species and will begin to be populated by the end of this month.
