Inspired and influenced by the famous trading history of the site it overlooks, the Smithfield Design House was designed to repair the urban grid, complete the matrix of back of pavement buildings and re-establish the historic urban grain of the area.
The building's scale, proportion and geometry are orchestrated to complement and enhance those of the existing urban fabric in a contemporary manner. Sharp, crisp edges contrast with the horizontal timber cladding that lines and breaks the symmetry of the build.
Situated in the heart of the Smithfield conservation area, the development lies a mere five minute walk from the city centre.
Harmonious to the characteristically narrow streets which surround it, the building's composition is ordered to provide a consistent, rigorous, coherent and honest architectural expression within its post-industrial context.
